What has the world become?
September 11th 2006 13:13
Five years on from September 11, the world seems to live in a climate of fear and depression. I have been noticing on television lately that nothing is ever enlightening and happy! SERIOUSLY!
Steve Irwin dies, then Peter Brock in a terrible car crash. I was just watching a program where Al Gore was speaking out about the effects of global warming and how we need action to be taken otherwise we are doomed and on Sunday I was watching a program where we needed to be wary of volcanoes erupting and killing us off! ARRGH!
Not to mention of course the anniversary of 9/11 and those terrible images across the television of people falling to their deaths.
Then there is the fact that my tropical fish who I have had for over five years is dying at the moment! I know, it sounds silly, but i have become attached to him and i am an animal person and i don't like to see the look of hopelessness in any animal's eyes. This has been going on for days now, and i hate seeing him suffer. If you're an animal person you will know what i mean.
Where are the happy go lucky stories in journalism these days? Fair enough we need current affairs on television, but we have become addicted to fear. The fear of life, the fear of death, the fear of nature, the fear of man itself. I found myself getting really worried and anxious about the state of our planet and the helplessness again of not being able to do anything. Frankly, i am sick of constantly being worried about what i will die of next!
I'm sure there are others out there who agree?
I am in two minds about seeing all this stuff on T.V. On the one hand i feel we need to be completely honest and open when it comes to current affairs, even though most of the shows on television today are sensationalised and don't really deal with the serious issues. I mean, come on, how important is the concept of discussing which teeth whitening product works best when there are issues such as gay marriage, political conspiracies and war to be dealt with? I think we need a reality check.
On the other hand, i think one can cross the line with just how much it is shown on T.V. Think about it, of all the T.V shows in T.V. land out there, how many are based on crime or violence? I don't think there is a happy medium, and therre probably never will be.
One thing is for sure. We must learn to re connect with each other and show peace, love and humanity to all walks of life, whether that be gay, straight, muslim, christian or tropical fish!
The quest continues....
