Temp to refresh your life
March 16th 2008 09:02
A friend of mine when she moved to the UK, decided she didn't want a permanent job that require her to settle into a routine and doing the same thing over and over and over again. So, she decided to temp. For the entire year, she simply took up temp jobs that ranged from a few weeks to a few months, and absolutely loved it.
Temping is great when you are looking for new and fresh stuff to do all the time. Some of us are simply not keen to be stuck repeatedly doing the same work, and like to be in different environments constantly, and hence, a lot of us turn to temping.
Temping require the ability to learn and adapt to a new environment very fast, quick with forming relationships with new people and possibly willingness to have no job security. Most temp jobs over workers who are on longer sick leave or maternity leave, or sometime simply to fill the gaps when the employers are looking for someone new.
If you are looking to temp, think of the following:
1. Am I ok with having no job security?
2. Do I have a specific skill that can be transferred from job to job without too much training?
3. Can I adapt and learn in a new environment fairly fast?
4. Do I easily get along with new people?
5. Am I looking for a career progression?
Unfortunately with temp jobs there are no prospect of career progression, unless your boss really likes you and bring the idea up to you, it is likely you are only going to be needed during the required times. Hence the last question above is important. If you are looking to progress in a particular career, don't temp, but if you are after a little bit of lifestyle change and something different for a while, maybe temping is just the right move for you.

Great post. I did this when I went back to England for a while and wanted a break from my usual field.
My only quibble was being referred as ‘The Temp’ in some places instead of my name. Afterwards, I read a book called The Temp, so I knew I wasn’t alone with label
