Project JOB SEARCH!

I've been on a job hunt for a while now. Actually, it has become a habit of mine to check out the fields just in case one day I am going to get retrenched at least I know where to look. However recent events mean this is actually going to become quite a useful habit, as from June onwards, I'll be moved out of Sydney, unable to keep my current corporate job that pays my bills and will be faced with trying to find a job in a much smaller place in the name of Coffs Harbour.

In a way, I welcome this change. Change always mean new opportunities and a new life. I look forward to a couple of months break from work so I can concentrate on my writing (and that half written book I've been meaning to finish since two years ago) and then, find myself a job after that to keep my finances going.

What worries me now, is my research into jobs in Coffs Harbour hasn't been great. There isn't much in the field of what I do, and I am under-qualified for those other jobs I would love to consider.

I am an IT Project Manager. Most work in this area are in capital cities where they can have clean and high rise offices and expensive lounge chairs at the reception. Don't get me wrong. I am not a person with aspirations to climb the corporate ladder. I am only in the job because it's the only thing besides writing I know how to do and am qualified to do. And of course, anything IT related in Coffs Harbour associates with hardware support and are mostly a male dominated territory.

I am not afraid to be surrounded by men, after all, I did attend six years at uni in a course still quite dominated by males (Computing Sciences) however knowing the job it'll be like throwing a bikini clad model into a field of construction workers.

We all know this gender equality thing is big in our current society, but there are simply just jobs that each of us would rather not do and hence, the gender imbalance in certain fields still exist.

Have you ever turned down a job because it's dominated by the opposite sex?

Nope.

I'm actually a 'Manny' right now

(male nanny)

If you're good at the work then the people of the opposite sex who dominate the industry will respect you for it.

That's my experience in the matter...

Not because of my gender, but because of my age, or my appearance, or even my diabetes. I figure if the employer can't see past the immediate discriminations, you're probably better off not working for them at all.
Good luck on the job hunt.. I've just relocated and am trying to find a job that won't end up in me hanging myself. haha.

Hi Opto - it's true It's so good you are a nanny!

Beth - I know, especially if your work involves a lot of 'team' work, it's hard working with people who don't see past that initial discrimination!

Good luck with you too!
