The value of mentors
April 7th 2008 10:51
If you are just starting up in a career, or even as simple as just being the newest member of a company, it can be hard trying to figure everything out yourself. Many of us feel timid about asking questions, thinking that it may show our incompetency, and some of us simply feel too shy about asking questions, and rather have something they can confide in.
This is where mentors come in. Mentors are a valuable asset to an organisation. They use their experience and knowledge to assist newer and younger team members to settle in and feel more comfortable. Mentors are usually not part of their mentee's immediate teams, and this really assist the person in need to speak up honesty about their questions and problems that they may feel uncomfortable in raising to their managers and team members.
A mentoring program can be quite time consuming. Mentors sacrifice their time to sit through hours of discussions with their mentees and if both people are busy at work, this can be hard to coordinate. When managed well, the mentors can help with skills and knowledge transition and can help in the harmony of colleague among a work place.
Consider asking someone you trust or someone you aspire to to be your mentor at the workplace. If you are experienced, perhaps consider becoming a mentor. Not only is this a great way to bring up the talents in a company, it's a great way to make friends and network too.
