Consulting Positions

"For this position you'll have two years relevant experience and have an excellent attitude to customer service..."

Says the job ad looking for junior writers in a community newspaper.

It's always a catch 22 situation here, not only just for the freshly graduated but also for those looking for a change of direction. After desperately looking for opportunities up in Coffs Harbour, I've decided maybe this is my calling to finally change my career and follow my dream path to become a full time writer. I've started studying a post graduate in Writing last year and will be continuing on this year, and I thought I'd try searching for junior writing jobs to start with.

But even with a title 'junior' position, they still require previous experience.

Hey I have five whole years of IT experience! Unfortunately that is not relevant.

I recently wrote an article on boosting your employability. I revisited my advice and realized there could be many things in there many could do during a change in career. Education is always a big thing and attitude. Now for me, I just need this determination and get my dream job! (Never fear, I am still looking in the IT sector, just as a safety measure )

Many a person has 'talked' their way into a job, ahead of seemingly more suitable applicants, don't hesitate to 'guild the lily' with respect to writing experience, reading between the lines, you'll be more of a customer 'servant' than a writer, but remember, great trees from little acorns grow.

Congratulations on getting the job.

Hi Amy

It's a disheartening oxymoron isn't it? I think perseverance is the best thing as hopefully not all businesses work like that.

Good luck with it,

Tracy
