A fresh perspective

May 14th 2008 04:24
We all get a little bored of our jobs once you go pass that honeymoon period. That's what I find. Especially in a desk job where you are stuck in front of the computer all day and do not have a lot of chance to get out and socialise with your work colleagues, it can get really dull!

What I found in this past two weeks working in Melbourne is, although I am still doing the same old job, I am in a different environment. Being somewhere completely new gave me a chance to recall what it's like on my first day and the excitement of the first time I walked into the office. I found that I am more relaxed, more perked up about my job and overall, am refreshed and ready to go back to my old environment and not feeling like my life have been drained by a wrath.

It's important to bring in that fresh perspective from time to time. If it means taking two days off around a weekend so you can have a long weekend when you can go camping or do something completely different, or simply working from a different office and meeting different people can refresh your mind about your job and your profession. Some people, to the extreme, even work in two completely different jobs (part time at each) so in a sense, while they are working in one job, it's a 'break' away for them from the other job.

It's also important to keep looking out for a challenge. Does one of your colleagues look like they are having trouble trying to use an application? Is your manager hinting that they need a hand with training the new team member or for a job that is not entirely in your job area? Sometimes taking up these opportunities means a lead to somewhere new. While helping out the new colleague you can pick up some of the new applications and processes that may not have been introduced to you before. Putting your hand up for a challenge also give you breathing space from the repetitive jobs you have to do daily, not to mention you'll be on your manager's good books.

So remember to always be looking out for breathing space and opportunities. Even if it means just sitting in a cafe for half an hour people watching. You'll be surprised how much fun it is! Then, once you are rested, you'll do better at your job than ever before.

Great advice there Amy. I too have a boring desk job and find that, among other distractions, blogging keeps my mind fresh, plus I take myself for a walk around the block every afternoon. It breaks up the day and makes me more productive in the long run. Nice post.

I do the job fly bys very often, keeps the brain alert, at that I am a natural.

I've done a combination of self emplyment and studying of more recent years and setting the world on fire, but I should have concentrated more on money, which would always come and go in my life.

I feel sorry for anyone who feels they cannot escape, employers seem to be so lacking in imagination.

Thanks Anonymous!

Katyzzz - that's why it's so important for us to be choosing the employers as they choose us. You really need to make sure you are working in the right place that won't disadvantage your skills! Thanks for your comments.
