Workplace dress code

It can be confusing sometimes to decipher just exactly how you should dress to work. You don't want to be too casual yet you don't want to over dress. And believe it or not, sometimes your career could depend on your dressing as much as it depends on your work!
Some jobs specifically states suites for both female and male employees, others state 'smart casual' while some can have a little more flexibility dependent on the activity of the day.
It's easy for those jobs with a uniform. You know exactly what to wear anyday because you pretty much have to wear the same thing. For a 'smart-casual' though, can be a little decieving. While the word 'casual' can mean a lot of things, smart-casual usually means you don't necessary have to wear suites and matching closed toe shoes, but you should still be moderate and presentable. It does not mean thongs and singlets.
For men, smart casual can mean a good collar shirt without a tie. For women, just a sleeved top and knee length skirt or pants. Closed shoes are generally a good option but these days a woman can probably get away with a nice pair of slipped on heels.
Even when some companies tell you "just wear what you want" - it pays to take care what you wear to work still. As much as we shouldn't people do still judge each other on how they dress and talk, and not taking care of your outfit can cost you the next pay rise or promotion.
If you are a client facing role - definitely always try to dress a little more than less. Once again, it's all about the image and impression, and it can affect your career growth!
