Who should you work for?
March 3rd 2008 05:05
Many of us who have been in the work force for a while now have an idea of whether we like our employer or not. Sometimes, work is not just about your pay, things such as any side benefits and flexibility that comes with your job also can affect the way you feel about your employer.
For example. I know I am definitely getting under paid in my day job. A scan through the vacancies in the papers show that I could easily give myself a 20% pay rise by simply working for someone else. However, I have decided to stay, and this is the same with most others in the company for the reason that the office is close to home, I have maximum flexibility of whether I need to work from home from time to time to take care of personal things as well as having good side benefits such as discounted health insurance/hotels/car rentals/dining and a great network of good managers.
Unfortunately too many people base their employment decisions on the pay alone, and end up not achieving a good work life balance to keep them happy.
Each year several Prime Minister's Employer of the Year Awards recognise those companies with good employee policies and benefits, and this is a good indication that the workforce is encouraged to create a good working environment for the work life balance of the employees.
So who should you work for? Obviously different people have different needs and not one employer can cater for all employee requirements, so you would need to access this yourself.
Seek.com.au has a good guide on Choose the right employer and in general, look out for employement news in the media that reports on company profiles can give you a good indication whether the employer is right for you. Talking to people already in the organisation would be the most direct way to find out too!
