Chasing your dreams
March 7th 2008 20:16
Call me stubborn. I continue searching for that perfect job even if I have landed a good job that pays me well, that allows me to work from home from time to time, that gives me the opportunity for further education and that is the envy of many in the same field, I am not giving up.
Then, you have people like a friend of mine, whose dream is to become a chef. After graduating from uni from an education degree, she got a job working as office assistance, in the hope to earn a little bit of money before getting into an apprenticeship. However, after sometime with the company, she got comfortable, and decided it doesn't really bother her never to achieve her dream. She was getting paid, and she was happy.
I suppose, it all depends on what you want out of life. If you really want something, you shouldn't sit around and wait for dreams to happen, especially when it comes to dream jobs. Sophie Toomey in her article Search for the dream job on CareerOne says "The job your heart desires rarely falls into your lap. You have to chase it."
Research is always important when it comes to chasing the job. What qualifications do I need; what further education will I have to go through; what's the market like; who can I talk to about this field? Education is always important, especially chasing a dream job you haven't had much experience with. With the advancement of technology education is becoming a lot more easier with the ability to study an entire degree online in Australia through Open Universities. Or if you are already in the field and want to advance higher up in the organisation, education in management is also the key.
It is also important to talk to people, as I previously wrote in It's not what you know, it's who you know. If you happen to be talking to the right people, your dream job may just be another interview away.
So don't wait. If you have a dream, go chase it.

I always say if you get up in the morning and think oh no iv got this horrendous job, then time to move on. keep at it and you will find, and lastly (i hope your not yawning by now ) You are dead right about its who you know ,not what u know. make as many contact s as poss, its a dog eat dog out there when it comes to the career be nice but ruthless and charismatic and that will get you everywhere, so dont worry youve only just arrived. Get to know the local shopkeepers on a friendly basis, they know every tom dick and harriet. good luck amy.

All the great entrepreneurs all did it their way, not the way everyone else thought they should do it.
Congrats on the new job, that must set your mind at rest at lot, money is important, I wouldn't worry about your friend, she probably just did not want to teach and thought she'd like to cook then she discovered something she found OK and decided to give the dream a miss, she maybe wasn't all that serious about it in the first place.
But it is rare to get everything we want in life. Some sacrifice will have to be made and if it's your dream job you're after, make sure he/she gets to know you're his/her dream worker. It's a two way street.

Yes, a two way communication certainly is important here Katyzzz, and I think a little bit of sacrifice can go a long way, and sometimes, things do turn out the way they should be!
