Taking a career break
April 12th 2008 13:30
I have officially handed in my resignation at my current job. There haven't been any luck trying to look internally for a position I can work with from Coffs Harbour, and now I am starting to look externally, even in industries not relating to my professional experiences.
Since my resignation I have applied for casual jobs at Coles and Woolworth around Coffs Harbour, as well as scored myself an interview with Flight Centre at the Coffs branch as a travel sales consultant.
So it's now only one month and a half before I will walk out of that big glass door and start working in a job that will pay half as much and just enough to pay the bills.
The current issue of my favourite travel magazine Wanderlust has an article titled "7 reasons you can take a career break", listing some of the myths and concerns of people considering taking a break from their professional careers to go travelling and fulfilling their life long dreams, and suggesting solutions for some of the concerns such as "It'll wreck my career"; "I can't afford it", "I have dogs/cats" when it comes to taking the time to do long term travels.
"A career break can reinvigorate you in your current position, give you the impetus to move jobs or even push you to change careers altogether." Wanderlust says, suggesting that taking a career break can actually provide career refreshment and a change of perspective, which some employers endorse.
True. Having been in a job for too long you sometimes lose the ability to see the big picture. Taking a career break, whether it be to go on a world tour or to do something completely different like fruit picking or do some voluntary work in your own communities can actually be beneficial for your own motivation and perspective on your current career.
Which means, this moving up to Coffs Harbour thing could actually be my chance to take a career break, to do something different.
Now that I think of it - it's not a bad idea after all!

Good luck with your job-hunting, you seem to make all your life changes positive, so I think this will be too.
I've had a few different jobs in different fields and try to look at all of them learning/giving me something new, even if only a varied experience. Some jobs have taught me that I don't want to work in that field so that was helpful info

Is that Katyzzz or is that Fobz? (Always have to ask just in case I get it wrong!)
True about the job at Flight Centre, but it does pay the bills for now. I am not giving up hope for an internal role yet as I still have a month and a bit to go before I officially leave the company. You never know!
