Project Job Search - October 2008

Put the financial crisis off your mind

October 26th 2008 10:22
It is hard not to think about it. It's in the papers - front page, back page and the middle pages - everyday and you hear of many who have lost a lot of money and many more who may have unfortunately lost their jobs.

However if you are still in search of employement, don't be put off by the current financial situations, there are, plenty of jobs out there.

Have a flip through the weekend papers there has been an increase of public sector jobs in all professions. Have a look at those. Work with the government may seem a little daunting, but most will offer great experiences for future prospects.

Have you tried employment agencies? Have your details listed with one can be an advantage in the job market as you'll be screened first for suitability even before others find out about the vacancy. This is not to say to stop all job hunting activities at once and simply rely on the agencies to get back to you. You still need to be proactive about job hunting so you can shop around for the best deal. You never know what is around the corner.

What about getting an apprenticeship and learn a trade?

Plenty of prospects are out there still for current job seekers and even the financial crisis can't stop the right person finding the right job. The key is to be persistent and determined. Keep looking. To borrow a catch phrase from a popular online employment agency: "If we do not seek, we will not find"

Good luck!

Graduate programs now hiring!

October 19th 2008 06:59
It's that time again. Will you be graduating or have you graduated recently and want to get a head start on your career?

Graduate programs are a great way (if you don't know somebody that knows somebody ... etc) to get into a career path you want. Most companies and organisations take in graduates of their chosen degrees and put them through a training program, most with opportunities to try out different areas of the business before deciding which career role to follow. They come with support from the management as well as the network one needs to advance in a career.

Right now, various government agencies, as well as major corporates are starting to recruit graduates for their in take next year.

Visit Graduate Careers Australia for more information as well as listings of opportunities currently out there. These program opportunities are also usually advertised in national and statewide papers so look out for them too!

Thinking about another degree or wanting to veer off to another career path but don't have time to go to school? Perhaps you can try Open Universities.

Open Universities is a cooperation between many of Australia's universities to create a flexible learning space where students can learn and gain a degree by distance learning. Using a combination of virtual lectures, online tutorials and posted reading material, there is no excuse for anyone not being able to learn.

The best part? Australians can put the tuition fees on the HECS scheme, and pay it off little by little in your taxes just like all other uni students.

There are skeptics out there about distance learning and online learning of course, many argue it's not the best way to learn and is a completely waste of time. Well, if you ask me, going to uni would also have been a complete waste of time if I didn't want to be there.

Distance learning is hard, and it relies heavily on your own will and motivation to learn and study. There is no one to push you, to remind you when assignments are due and to track your efforts and hours. You have to do the work, and hence Open Universities is a great way for those who want to learn - Learn.

Of course, TAFE also offer similar distance education courses you can take without having to go through a entire degree. Seek out these opportunities at your local education office.

If you have a hour to spare at night, why not put it towards further education? For those looking for an advancement in their job and wanting to change careers, this is all towards your own advantage.
